It was an exciting day in that it was a lot of fun, but sad because it was our last day at the preschool! I don't think the kids actually realize that we won't be coming back! It started off normal with free play time and snack. During snack Hannah and I were sitting on the floor gluing something in their journals, when all of a sudden Lindsey and Ani came out with two very large white envelopes. They had gotten Hannah and I a very nice gift of a metal spray painted frog with all their names on it and bath fizz in the shape of a frog! It was so nice and sweet of them to think of us! It really started to sink in that it was our last day at that point. Next, we all got our coats on and ventured over to the Proctor gym where they got to run around and be crazy. Hannah got some really great shots on her new camera! When we came back we had story time and lunch! It was a crazy day! It was really sad to leave, even though it didn't feel like senior project was really over. In the afternoon Hannah and I had taken the journals with us to finish them up. We printed out a bunch of pictures and taped them in the journals. Placed coloring papers in the pocket for them to color at a later date and glued in the recipe for frog pretzels. This took a lot longer than it sounded and by then we were exhausted! I am so sad that senior project is over. Hannah and I keep saying to each other how much we are going to miss the little kids! We will definitely have to go back and visit next week!

HANNAH GOODNOW IS LEGAL! I got to the school and Hannah was already using her brand new camera that she got. The kids were playing around the school doing various things. While they finished up play time and snack Hannah and I glued the frog eyes on the paper so they could create their pond scenes. Afterwards we had a morning meeting where they found out the centers. At first our center wasn't popular but after the kids saw what we were doing more and more came. What the kids did was color the paper they had with crayons, markers, they glued beads to it and we used pipe cleaners to make grass and lily pads. There was also a frog stamp that they could use. They actually really liked doing this center because they got to glue and work with things such as beads and pipe cleaners that they don't normally get to craft with. They ended up really getting into it! Half way through the center I had to pop into Assembly because today was the sports assembly, but I only stayed for fifteen minutes. When I came back the group had started music time and Hannah was finishing up with the last few kids on their projects! Next, while the kids went outside for play time, we pulled three in at a time to decorate some cupcakes I had baked for Hannah' birthday. They put frosting on it, jimmies, smarties, jellybeans, and mini chocolate chips. They had a lot of fun doing this and could hardly wait to eat it. They ended up being a motivation for them to eat their lunch because they weren't allowed to have their cupcakes until they finished their lunch! It seemed to be a very long day compared to others, but was a lot of fun celebrating Hannah's birthday!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://papruddenmo.blogspot.com/2008/05/hannah-goodnow-is-legal-may-22.html' title='HANNAH GOODNOW IS LEGAL! It started off really exciting because Sarah brought in Indira, Ani's little sister. Ani made sure to tell her friend Lindsey that she wasn't pretend, she's real so you can touch her. Ani was very cute about it! After free time they settled down for snack and I sat at the round table with a very energetic group! They were being very silly! Then half of the group went to the library while we had a bunch of centers going on. They were short centers so I sat over in the book area keeping an eye on the kids playing with the dollhouses. When the rest of the group got back we had a short morning meeting to inform us of what centers were being offered. I ran a center where they had paper and got to draw with markers and put stickers on the paper! They really liked it, even though I found it not very entertaining. Today I had to leave half way through the center because I had my last away game ever! It was sad, but was the reason I had to leave early. Tomorrow is Hannah's 18Th birthday, so tonight I baked some cupcakes that the kids will decorate tomorrow in celebration of her birthday! We thought one of them was dead but it was just floating there! Today was a hard day because they don't have centers so we are really there for the extra hands. After snack we headed to the music building where we had music with Bill. They love music because they get to play with instruments, jump around, sing and dance! Afterwards, we walked over to the Andover Elementary School where they meet with their reading buddies in the fifth grade. Next, we headed out to the elementary school's playground to have outside time because they have a bigger, more exciting playground and their reading buddies came out to play with them! I spent most of my time giving Lindsey and Ani under-doggies and pushing them on the swings. Then we walked back to the school where we headed them all cups of water because they were so famished from all the walking and playing they had just done. Lindsey, who was sitting on my lap somehow poured the rest of her water all over her pants and even managed to get some on my feet. So, I had to take her to change her pants and then we quickly went back to the book area to listen to the puppet show. Then, they went outside on their own playground for a bit, while Hannah and I taped pictures I had developed in their science journals. When they came back in we helped them wash their hands and settle down for lunch. It was a fun day and I'm sad to think I only have three more days with them=(

Froggie Eyes! I think I love these kids more and more each day! Ani finally returned to school after the exciting news of being a big sister last night and was more than happy to show pictures that were on news to Kathy and I. After snack we all met up for morning meeting. Fenn did the calender and Sasha recorded the weather for us. Hannah wasn't there at first so I had to do most of the center by myself. However, our center today was creating frog eyes! We cut egg cartons up so that there were two egg spots given to each child to paint. They decorated it however they wanted. Later they will drawn a pond on a piece of paper and glue the eyes on the paper so it creates the illusion of frog eyes popping out of the water! Hannah did a demo before the center to see what it would look like and it looks cool! Afterwards, there was story time and then the kids got ready to go outside. Meanwhile, Hannah and I finished coloring the rest of the puzzle pieces which we hope to put together later this week. When Hannah and I went out on the football field to join them it was as if we were four years old again. We were racing them, holding them upside down and tickling them and then they even had pig piles on top of us! We finished with a good old game of tadpole, tadpole, frog! They really enjoy that game! Last, we settled down for lunch and left for our own lunch!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://papruddenmo.blogspot.com/2008/05/froggie-eyes-may-15th.html' title='Froggie Eyes! It’s crazy to think I am almost done with senior project! These two weeks have flown by and it’s been a really great experience! So far I have realized that everyday is somewhat similar. The only things that change are the activities and the attitudes of the kids. I learned that I love working with kids, but that I am going to have to be a lot more patient and not get so easily frustrated. I also learned that kids don’t always think for themselves. For example, we made pretzels this week and one of the girls decided that they didn’t like the pretzel, so her friend sitting right next to her decided she didn’t like it either. It was a bit disappointing but we knew she didn’t like it only because her friend didn’t. It showed that kids really pick up on their surrounding environment. Another example is I noticed is that one day, a girl who I have played with a lot was telling all the kids to be quiet and saying “sshhh!’ to them during story time, as I have done in the past. I started to realize that the only reason she was probably doing this was because I have done it in the past, so she automatically thought it was ok for her to do it as well!
Everyday I enjoy what I do. I love how we never do the same thing and how there is always something entertaining to do with the preschoolers. I like that I get to be outside a lot and that I get to be creative. It is fun everyday in some way!
Once again, as it was last week, Hannah and I aren’t asked to do certain activities. A lot of the time we offer to do a center if we don’t have one planned for that day or without asking we will give the kids their milk or water bottles for snack and lunch. It is the sort of environment where we do things without being asked. Hannah and I know what needs to be done, so we are able to do things without having Raz tell us.
There were two things this week that didn’t happen exactly as I imagined. The first was on Thursday we asked Sam Payson to come play the guitar and teach the kids a song about frogs. He showed up twenty minutes late just as Hannah and I were leaving. It was frustrating because the kids were eating lunch so we couldn’t exactly stop them from what they were doing so we told him thanks anyways. I learned that you can’t always depend on people and that you should probably have something else planned if they don’t follow through, which Hannah and I hadn’t done, so we felt badly about it. The other thing that didn’t happen exactly the way we wanted was our cooking center. We got the recipe for toad pretzels and Hannah made the dough. The pretzels didn’t really come out as pretzels, more of hard dough clumps. The kids still ate them, at least most of them but we wished they had come out more like pretzels. Oh well, they still liked them and had fun playing with the dough so that was good.
I will benefit from this week because I know that I need to be prepared for whatever happens. If something doesn’t go right or if a plan doesn’t follow through I need to be prepared with something else! It was a good week and I’m excited for my last week of senior project!

Two weeks already gone by? The kids were so great this week and so much fun! It was days like these that make me happy I did senior project! Today was a pretty normal day starting with free time and snack. There were only thirteen on them there today which felt like a very small group! Afterwards, they had morning meeting and centers. Hannah and I did a cooking center. Hannah had prepared dough the night before and today we had the kids make shapes and designs with the dough to create pretzels. They were all supposed to be in the shape of frogs but we soon realized that tadpoles were easier to make. Once they finished, the kids went to the Proctor gym and Hannah and I stayed behind to keep an eye on the pretzels and clean up from the center. It was cool because they left with the picture of what they created and came back to the finished product. The kids also got to paint an egg wash on it. They came out alright, but not as well as we had hoped. Most of the kids liked them, but some decided that because their best friend didn't like it, they weren't going to like it either. It was a fun project and we think the kids had a lot of fun playing with the dough. Once they came back from the gym they sat down for lunch and we handed out the pretzels. After they cleaned up from lunch Hannah and I headed off to our lunch. It was a fun day had by all!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://papruddenmo.blogspot.com/2008/05/two-weeks-already-gone-by-cant-be.html' title='Two weeks already gone by? May 15th

Hours worked: (8:15-10:15, 10:45-12:30)

Today was a very exciting day because we told all the preschoolers that Ani had become a big sister yesterday. Sarah McIntyre went to the hosptial yesterday and had her baby girl! It was very exciting and Amy went around asking all the kids what they think Ani's sister's name should be. There were some very interesting names, but my personal favorite was Nicole's name, Molly. The day was pretty normal. The kids were in a great mood and very excited to play. Lindsey played doctor with me during free time. After snack we had morning meeting, but Hannah and I slipped out half way through to go get our yearbooks since they came out today! I ended up having to help Joey hand out the yearbooks to the sophmores because he was by himself. When we got back in it was towards the end of centers so Hannah and I jumped into the ISpy matching game. Next, there was a short puppet show put on by Amy and Raz. Then the kids went outside for a bit. While they were outside I started working on a puppet show that we had found. I had to alter it a bit because it doesn't exactly work so I had to change some of the characters and some of the lines. While I was typing that up, Hannah was coloring some pictures to make a matching game for the school to have. Unfortunatly, there will be no picture tonight because the internet is so slow! Sorry! The kids were in great moods and everything seemed to run smoothly. It was a short day, but felt about the same length! We went there and they were having free time. Hannah and I jumped in with the other kids who were playing with the silly putty. Next, they had snack! I was demanded to sit next to Lindsey, which is usual, but she wasn't going to eat if I wasn't sitting there. Afterwards, half of the group went to the library across the street and the other half stayed behind with Hannah, Amy and I. Amy read a couple stories to them and then once the rest of them came back we had morning meeting. Hannah had to go to french class so I ended up running our center. The kids each got their own puzzle piece that we had ordered. We wrote their name on the puzzle piece and then got to decorate it any way they wanted. Some liked the activity more than others. Even Raz, Amy and Kathy had a piece of puzzle to decorate! Tonight Hannah and I went into the black room and printed a couple pictures that I had taken on my photo camera. They came out really well and we can't wait to print more!

Ribbit! It was the sort of day that reminded me why I wanted to work with little kids on my senior project! They were all in good moods and particularly funny! The day started off normal with free play time and snack. During the free time Hannah and I gathered together some of the kids who had not finished their frog sequence worksheet the week before. This worked really well because we helped them finish it quickly enough that they still had time to play. After snack we went to music with Bill at the music studio. They always enjoy that, especially when they get to play the instruments of maracas, hitting sticks together, and a cow bell. Afterwards, we headed back to the school, had morning meeting and began centers. Hannah and I finished up the frog sequence with the last few kids and some of the others that came to our center drew in their science journals. Ani was there the whole time because she said she had LOTS of homework to do. It was really funny! Then we listened to two books on tape at the book area. Next, we went outside to the football field where they got to ride on those sticks with the horse heads, through around really big balls and run around. I got to finish my roll of film and then we played tadpole, tadpole, frog for the last ten minutes of recess. Afterwards, we went inside and settled down for lunch. Hannah and I hung around for a little bit, but left after awhile because we hadn't eaten anything that whole morning. It was a typical Monday, in that Hannah and I were both tired when we arrived. However, being around little kids forces you to wake up right away. The kids were playing and running around as usual. Then it was snack time and today it seemed that we had to continuously remind kids to sit forward or sit down or focus on their snack and not their friend sitting next to them. Afterwards, we had morning meeting where we figured out the weather and what the date was. Then it was centers. Hannah and I ran a center of puzzles, which was actually pretty popular. Some of the other options were making silly putty, painting flowers and coloring. Then Amy read two stories on the couch and we went outside on the playground. Neither Hannah or I was prepared for the weather and were freezing cold. Luckily, Lindsey didn't want to wear her sweatshirt so I put it on the beginning on my arms to help keep me warm (even though it didn't work). I ended up pretending they were big teeth and would catch Lindsey when she came down the slide by tickling her. Since all the teachers were freezing we decided to go inside and have music time where we listened to a CD, sang along and did all the hand movements for them. Finally, the kids settled down for lunch and Hannah and I headed off for our own lunch. Tomorrow I will meet with Swayze, my mentor, to discuss everything that has been going on!

Weekley Reflection, week one!

I cannot believe that one week of senior project has already gone by! Time sure has flown and I can’t believe it. It was so much fun. This week a lot of what we did focused on getting to know the kids and learning their schedule. It was sort of an introduction week for Hannah and I, but we still got a lot done! The biggest thing I learned this week is that you have to have A LOT of patience when working with younger kids. There were some days where I thought I was going to go crazy, but I knew that getting really mad wasn’t going to make it easier. I also learned that when planning lessons for little kids you have to vary it so that you are not doing the same type of thing everyday. We realized that after a couple days of coloring activities that they were getting bored of it, so we decided to change our activity and they seemed to really like it. I realized that you always have to change it up with little kids and that being spontaneous is what they love!
I loved what I was doing! I adore working with all the little kids. I think that working with them is really fun and I believe that what Hannah and I are doing with them is a lot of fun. It is also nice because we are two extra sets of hands to help the teachers and being a sister of a teacher I understand how much they appreciate the extra help. Hannah and I have so many more special activities planned for them and are so excited to share them with the children.
Hannah and I weren’t specifically ever asked to do certain activities. Raz always asked us what we had prepared for each day and just asks us what we needed in order to do our activities. Other than the activities that we supplied Hannah and I are always around helping opening snacks, tying shoes, playing on the playground with them and reading stories with them.
The only surprises that popped up to me is how little they really are. I mean I knew we were working with preschoolers, but I guess I just imagined them to be a bit bigger and a lot more developed mentally. I kind of realized that some of the activities we have planned, they may not be able to do because they are not there yet. Other than this I personally did not have too many surprises!
I think I will definitely benefit from this week in many ways. Now I have an understanding of those aged kids and what they like to do. They love to play outside, run around, and enjoy the simply things in life like a sandbox. I also now know what their schedule is like, so I can expect what each day will be like. I think that the preschool is a lot of hard work, but it pays off because of how much fun the little kids can be! I am very excited to see what this week holds!

F stands for Frog, Day 5

Hours Worked: (8:30-12:30)

Today started off normal, where I went there by myself since Hannah had class in the morning. Afterwards they cleaned up and had snack. Then we took a special trip to the Proctor gym where the kids got to run around and play with some of the balls in the gym. They seemed to like this quite a bit, although there was one point where Hannah and I were in the bathroom for fifteen minutes because a bunch of them had to go to the bathroom. Next, we walked back to the preschool and had a morning meeting where they told them their center options. Hannah and I had out center at a huge whiteboard that sits on the group where we taught them how to write the letter F. We showed them, wrote it with them and taught them what noise a F makes. They seemed to like this a lot because they got to use markers and draw on the whiteboard. Some got so into it that they continued to learn how to write the whole word Frog. It was pretty cool. Then there was a short puppet show put on by Amy and Raz. Next, the kids got to go outside and draw with sidewalk chalk. After, they went into the playground and got to run around. We found some fold-up tents and put those out but it seemed to cause a lot of problems. I had three kids come to me crying within five minutes. It was crazy, so we decided it was time to go in for lunch. AS the kids started to settle down and get comfortable I stapled the newsletters and put them in the kids mailboxes, so the parents will finally know what we are doing in their kids classroom! After they had finished lunch and were preparing for nap time, Hannah and I headed off to lunch. It was a really good week and I am shocked as to how fast it went by!

How Does a Tadpole Grow? It seemed that every child was either on the verge of tears or was crying. On the flip side we got some good frog time in. The day started of normal with playing with the kids in the morning as they colored a frog picture, that we then glued into their science journals. After eating snack they were given center options. The frog center featured coloring four pictures showing the stages in which a frog grows. Seven out of the fifteen actually completed the center. Their cutting and gluing skills were pretty good, obviously some better than offers but all of them still needed a bit of assistance from Hannah and I. Then we took them on a surprise trip to the pond where Hannah caught a huge bullfrog. They were all amazed and got to touch the frog! It was pretty cool. After we let the frog go, we walked over to the baseball field and let them run around the bases, roll down the hill and run down the hill. Unfortunately, that was cut short by Fenn having to go to the bathroom so we stopped at the health center on our way back to take a break. When we returned to the school, Kathy read them a couple stories and then they went out of the playground to run around before lunch. Meanwhile Hannah and I worked on our parent newsletter that is being sent to all the parents tomorrow. The newsletter is filled with pictures and information about Hannah and I as well as what we are planning to do the next three weeks. We had to stop early as the kids came in for lunch. We helped them all settle down, open their food and find them a spot to eat. They were all pretty tired and very ready for nap time. It was a good but stressful day!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://papruddenmo.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-does-tadpole-grow-day-3.html' title='How Does a Tadpole Grow? When we arrived everything was normal as the kids were playing around the classroom doing various activities. Hannah and I joined in with different games playing with dolls, doing dress-up, and of course observing the tadpoles. We feed them today because the night before we made their food. Tadpole food consists of boiling lettuce and then freezing it in ice cube trays. We made them one cube and the tadpoles didn't seem to want it, but a website said that you are supposed to give one to them every couple of days so hopefully them will eat it! After cleaning up we had snack. I am still very shocked by the fact that they are ready to eat snack by 9:30 in the morning. I just ate my breakfast while they were having snack! After Lagan refused to eat his snack he asked me to read him a story. As we were sitting on the couch we got a surprise visit from Michele, who ended up taking pictures of us to put in the home page for Senior Project. Afterwards, the kids were split up into two groups. Half went to the Andover library with Amy and the other half stayed behind. When they left for the library Raz, Hannah and I made bracelets out of beads and pipe cleaners as one of the gifts the kids will give their moms for Mothers Day. Hannah and I liked ours too much, so now we wear ours! Then came the big event, the pond! We took them to the pond and let them look around for a bit. Hannah found a frog and we pointed it out them, as they soon learned that you have to be quiet when you are around the frogs. After looking we had to take them back to meet up with the whole group. Then came centers and even though Hannah had to go to class I took a small group of kids to the pond with one of the teachers. We brought nets and they got to try and catch tadpoles and frogs. I found a couple but wasn't fast enough to catch them. Matt Mackenzie soon came along and caught a tadpole for them to touch and hold, but it slipped out of Sasha's hand! Then we went back and took one more group to the pond. They liked it as well when we caught the tadpole. They had some trouble sharing the two nets we had so hopefully we can find some more. Joe, along with the others really wanted to catch a frog but we explained that we have to wait a bit longer for more tadpoles to grow into frogs before we could catch them. Overall, I think the kids really liked the pond and wished they could spend more time there! (sorry this one was long as well!)

"I wanna see the sea creatures!" As soon as we opened the door, eyes turned towards us to see what was in our hands. Raz helped us find a spot for them and we turned on the light so it was easy for the kids to see the tadpoles. Almost half of them came over and were very interested in them. Then we gave most of them their science journals so they could draw pictures of the tadpoles that they saw! They did a really good job and really got into it. Joe, did four pages worth of pictures and Garrett even drew the tank that they were in. Afterwards, they cleaned up and had snack. Then it was a very exciting day because we went to see Bill at the music studio where they sang lots of songs, danced, and even got to play some instruments. Then we walked over to the elementary school where they met with their fifth grade reading buddies. Next, we got some time to go on the playground where Hannah and I spent most of our time pushing the kids on the swings. Then we walked back to the daycare and had a puppet show that was put on by Raz and Amy. Following the puppet show the kids got more outside time on the daycare playground. Before Hannah and I left for lunch we helped all the kids settle down for lunch and made sure they had everything they needed. Lagan was not very interested in eating lunch, but wanted to see the "sea creatures" which was the tadpoles. Today was a more relaxed day and we got lots of exercise by walking around the small town of Andover!

Science Journals: Day 1, 5/5/08, written at 8:20

Hours worked: 8:00-12:15
Time spent working outside of classroom: 1:00-1:45
6:00-7:45 (Total=6 hours, 45 minutes)

Today was the first day at the Proctor Daycare. I was very excited about it and very nervous! As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted with open arms and welcomed by the kids, especially a boy named Jim who proceeded to run his fingers through my hair and question me about my favorite cloud, frog and other things. When we first got there Hannah and I sat down and cut out an outline of a frog. After that we had some downtime where we played with the kids because at that time they had free time where they could do whatever they wanted. Sand was being dung in at the sandbox, blocks were being stacked high and cars were being raced around the carpet! Hannah and I both had hot tea and tomatoes being poured on us and we were being cut up with a plastic knife from the kitchen area! After that Hannah had to go to class so it was just me! I was a bit nervous, but it ended up being totally fine. It was crazy to see that it was already snack time at 9:30 in the morning. I sat at a table with five other kids and talked with them while they ate their snacks. Then, the kids all circled up for what is called, "morning meeting" where they recorded the weather, put up the date and someone told a riddle. Today is was Ani, and her riddle was about a flower and a bee! Then came centers! The kids were given an option of four centers and when their name was chosen out of a bin, they got to choose what center they wanted to start at. It was nice to see that the first four kids all choose our center. For the first day we had the kids create their own science journals. The night before Hannah and I had gone to the bookstore to get the free notebooks that the bookstore gives out. When they came to the center they were given a cut out frog and told to decorate it any way they wanted. While they colored they choose a color of construction paper that was glued on the front of the notebook. When they were done we assisted them with gluing the frog on to the notebook. Then if they could write their name, they would, if not we would write it for them. A good amount seemed to know most of the letters in their name, which was impressive! Afterwards we all gathered around a couch while one of the teachers read a couple stories to us! Both Hannah and I had children swarming around us and a few even laying on us! They sure didn't have trouble adjusting to us being there. Next, we went outside for recess! A few of them needed help getting coats and shoes on, but then even Hannah and I got our energy out by chasing after them, going down the slide and playing "Tadpole, Tadpole, Frog!". This game is basically duck, duck, goose except we changed the name so it was one more thing that related to our unit! Then when they were all tired out, we brought them inside and they sat down for lunch. Once everything was settled Hannah and I went off to lunch. After, we had a short meeting with Raz, and afterwards we planned for the rest of the week! They all questioned and hollered as we walked out the door asking where we were going! It was sad to go but we promised we would be back tomorrow! Finally, after dinner Joey, Rob, Hannah and I went to the pond and caught four tadpoles! Then we created a suitable living environment for them. Overall, I think day 1 has gone really well and we are very excited to bring in our tadpoles tomorrow to show the kids!

First Blog Post EVER!

This is my first blog post ever. I am very excited to use this program. Senior Project starts this Monday and I think it is going to be fun. I'm glad that I am working with Hannah as well because we haven't spent a lot of time together over the years so it will be fun to start and end high school spending it with Hannah. This project works well for the both of us because I want to go into teaching and Hannah wants to major in environmental science. It is a great way that we can both start learning about our intended majors in college!
